DESCRIPTION OF THE POLICY INSTRUMENT

Examining the potential of promoting nutrient recirculation and removal as a measure supplementing other water protection measures.

STATE OF IMPLEMENTATION

Implementation has started. (The implementation of one or more planned elements of the measure is underway.)

FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE STATE OF IMPLEMENTATION

A joint analysis, assessment and research project coordinated by the Government was implemented to study the potential for improving the conditions for sustainable aquaculture in sea areas in general and methods to enhance environmental protection in the sector, such as the use of the Baltic Blend fish feed produced by nutrient recycling. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and the Ministry of the Environment (YM) have agreed on the next steps to implement the recommendations of the research project. The objective of the domestic fish promotion programme and the updated Aquaculture Strategy is to promote the use of recycled feed. Experiments have been launched to remove nutrients, for example by growing algae.
