Use of structure lime in agriculture as a means of water protection

DESCRIPTION OF ACTION

The project will produce information and guidelines on the use of structure lime as a means of water protection in agriculture in Finland. Laboratory and field experiments will be carried out to examine the effects of structure lime on soils, crop yields and nutrient loading on water bodies and to determine the optimal rates and times of application. The results will be compiled into a practical guide on structural liming in different types of clay soils for farmers and advisors. The extensive cooperation project is led by the Turku University of Applied Sciences, and the parties implementing the project also include the Pyhäjärvi Institute, the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE), the Sugar Beet Research Centre, the City of Turku and ProAgria Western Finland.
