The significance of wastewater treatment plants as sources of microscopic plastic litter

DESCRIPTION OF ACTION

In her doctoral thesis, Julia Talvitie examines the significance of wastewater treatment plants as pathways of microlitter from municipal wastewater to the receiving aquatic environment. The thesis examines what happens to microlitter and microplastics during the treatment process and how efficiently the different steps of treatment remove litter from wastewater. The thesis also investigates the amount of microplastics in wastewater sludge and compares the efficiency of various tertiary treatments in enhancing the removal of microlitter from treated wastewater. Julia Talvitie’s doctoral thesis “Wastewater treatment plants as pathways of microlitter to the aquatic environment” on the subject was examined on 18 May 2018.
