Speeding up the Ecological Recovery of the Baltic Sea – an assessment

DESCRIPTION OF ACTION

The study assessed potential sea-based measures to address problems caused by the release of nutrients from internal reserves in the Baltic Sea. In the study, sea-based measures referred to measures that aim to reduce the release of nutrients that are bound to bottom sediments and potentially to remove/reduce nutrients from the sea. The report was published in 2018.

The report provides a good knowledge base to discuss the issue in HELCOM. The HELCOM Ministerial Meeting 2018 stated in its Ministerial Declaration that HELCOM would develop and apply a risk assessment framework and elaborate regional principles as guidance for internal nutrient reserves management. This work is currently underway.
