DESCRIPTION OF ACTION
The project studied the effects of the utilisation of sewage sludge on human health and the environment. The project gathered information on harmful substances and pathogens found in sewage sludge. The harmful substances covered were harmful metals, organic contaminants (including pharmaceuticals) and microplastics. In addition to excreted bacteria, viruses and protozoa, the pathogens studied included environmental bacteria that can cause infections in people. One of the adverse effects studied was antibiotic resistance transmission by micro-organisms. The final report on the project was published at the end of 2018.
