DESCRIPTION OF ACTION
The SUMMIT project will finalise and pilot the national monitoring system for microlitter insofar as this is included in the EU Decision on the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive revised in 2017. The methodological section of the project complies with the plans and preliminary guidelines prepared within the researcher community and the HELCOM EN Marine Litter. The activities mainly focus on open sea area monitoring. In addition, coastal monitoring will be carried out to collet reference material. In particular, microplastics in the sea surface water and sediments will be examined. Based on the results and experiences gained, a proposal will be drawn up on regular microlitter monitoring in Finnish waters.
