Determining the areas affected by underwater noise for the purposes of maritime spatial planning and mitigating adverse effects

DESCRIPTION OF ACTION

The project measured the temporal and spatial variability of underwater noise. Effects on marine organism groups were studied in a literature review. The project produced noise maps, which can be used in maritime spatial planning and the assessment of organism group-specific pressures. The project cooperated with the City of Helsinki Environment Centre and Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy. In its communications, the project sought to increase the knowledge of various sectors on underwater noise and its effects. Planners and decision-makers can use the research results produced by the project in their work. The project also produced a YouTube video “Baltic Sea’s underwater soundscapes” on the Finnish Environment Institutes channel.
