Designating the Baltic Sea as a NOx emissions control area (NECA) in the International Maritime Organization (IMO)

DESCRIPTION OF ACTION

The Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) approved the designation of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea as an emissions control area for nitrogen oxides (NECA) in October 2016. In these areas nitrogen oxide emissions are to be reduced by 80 per cent from the present level. The regulation will be applicable to new ships built after 1 January 2021.
