Degradation of new biodegradable plastic materials in the Baltic Sea marine environment and assessment of associated environmental risk (UBINAM)

DESCRIPTION OF ACTION

The project studies the use of bio-based and biodegradable plastic packaging materials in Finland and carries out laboratory and field studies on the degradation rates of such materials and on microbial communities responsible for biomaterials degradation in the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. In addition, the project examines the ability of bio-based and biodegradable materials to absorb harmful substances from sediments. As a concrete result, the project seeks to provide an overview of the use of bio-based and biodegradable materials and the trends in its development in the near future in domestic grocery retail business and industry. The project produces information for trade, industry, consumers and authorities to support their material choices.
