As part of the third Baltic Sea Action Plan 2019–2023 of the cities of Helsinki and Turku, gypsum treatment will also be carried out in the fields of the cities (Baltic Sea Challenge).

DESCRIPTION OF ACTION

Under the goal “Clear coastal waters”, action 22 is one of the water protection measures to be taken in agriculture and the maintenance of green areas. The objective of the actions under this goal is to reduce the loading of suspended solids and eutrophying nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) from the cities and their catchment areas. Gypsum treatment was also tested in the fields of Helsinki in 2016, and gypsum treatments under the new action plan were started in autumn 2018. In addition, fields will be treated with structure lime in Helsinki and Turku as part of their new joint Baltic Sea Action Plan 2019–2023 in an extensive cooperation project on the use of structure lime in agriculture as a means of water protection.
