As part of Helsinki and Turku’s third Baltic Sea Action Plan 2019–2023 (action 31), the removal of nutrients from the sea will be promoted, for example, by continuing and expanding the Local Fishing Project approach and experimenting with new restoration methods. Helsinki (action 68) will also identify how to experiment with planting submerged vegetation in test areas. The restoration of submerged vegetation could make water clearer and bind organic matter and nutrients in the sediment, which would allow eutrophication to be curbed (Baltic Sea Challenge).

DESCRIPTION OF ACTION

Under goal 1 “Clear coastal waters” action 31 is one of the water protection measures relating to nutrient removal, and under goal 4 “Systematic water area management” action 68 is a measure to restore the marine environment. The objective of the actions under goal 1 is to reduce the loading of suspended solids and eutrophying nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) from the cities and their catchment areas, and the actions under goal 4 seek to supplement information on the underwater environment in the marine areas of the cities and to implement principles of multifunctional use.
